Why was Driver CPC introduced?

Driver CPC was introduced as a requirement of EU Directive 2003/59. The objective is to improve drivers' awareness of road safety, fuel efficiency, career development and maintain the high standards of professional driving.

Who does it affect?

Acquired rights drivers

PCV drivers who were operating prior to 10th September 2008, were required to complete their first block of 35 hours training by 9th September 2013. The deadline to complete the second block of training, and obtain a DQC, was the 9th September 2018. LGV drivers who were operating prior to 10th September 2009, were required to complete their first block of 35 hours training by 9th September 2014. The deadline to complete the second block of training, and obtain a DQC, is the 9th September 2019.

New Drivers

For PCV and LGV drivers who obtained their licence post these dates – five years from the date of obtaining initial Driving CPC. Drivers of both PCV and LGV vehicles only need to do one set of periodic training every 5 years. To confirm if you are up to date with your Driver CPC Periodic Training, you can check your training recorded hours if you click here. Please note: It is illegal to drive professionally without Driver CPC, both the driver and operators can be fined up to £1,000 without it.

How do I become/remain compliant?

There are two types of Driver CPC Training:

‘Existing’ drivers benefit from ‘acquired rights’ are obliged to undertake Periodic Driver CPC Training (e.g. drivers who already have a DQC Card) - DrivingCPC can provide this training.

‘New’ LGV drivers gaining a category C, C1, C+E or C1+E licence have to obtain the Initial Driver CPC Training (e.g. drivers who do not have a DQC Card) - DrivingCPC do not provide this training. However, we have partners who we can arrange this training for you.

To ensure your DQC doesn’t expire, and to spread the cost, DrivingCPC recommends drivers carry out at least 7 hours of Driver CPC training each year.

DrivingCPC offers a variety of general and specialist Driver CPC training courses, these can be taken at your organisations site or alternatively at one of our nationwide centres.
